CHED provides P4.4 million to indigent, deserving students in Pangasinan

Urdaneta City, Pangasinan. On Thursday – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Ilocos Region granted PHP4.4 million in grants to around 638 students from Urdaneta City University (UCU) at SM City Urdaneta Central.

The cash grant is for the Tertiary Education Subsidy Program and the Tulong Dunong Program under the Unified Student Financial Assistance System (Unifast).

During a forum, CHED-1 regional director Dr. Christine Ferrer said each student-beneficiary received between PHP7,500 and PHP10,000 in assistance.

The Tertiary Education Subsidy Program covers the full or partial cost of education for priority students at state universities and colleges (SUCs), CHED-recognized Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs), and private higher education institutions.

Qualified students include those on the government’s most recent indigents list at all SUCs, LUCs, private HEIs, and places with no SUC or LUC (PNSL), among others.

Tulong Dunong, on the other hand, provides financial assistance for qualified and deserving students looking for college degrees. Beneficiaries receive PHP7,500 per semester.

Beneficiaries must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an SUC, a CHED-recognized LUC, or a CHED-registered higher education institution.

“I will use the financial assistance to pay for my tuition and any related expenses. Mhany Kharim Segui, a third-year Bachelor of Education student at UCU, said he will use the remaining amount for additional educational expenses.

Beneficiaries Janelle Mallare, Joshua Cabico, and Jay-ar Tabangin, all third-year college students, thanked the national government for the programs.

“Malaking tulong po ito (This is a huge help),” they were saying. (PNA)
