Students Receive an Early Christmas Surprise at Malacañang
MANILA, Philippines – On Sunday morning, Malacañang welcomed nearly a thousand students from Luzon to a festive celebration as the holiday spirit began to spread across the nation.
The event, held at the Kalayaan Grounds of the presidential palace in Manila, showcased a vibrant “Puso ng Pasko” performance. This all-Filipino, full-length Christmas ballet was brought to life through the music of National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab and the choreography of National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, making it a highlight of the celebration.
Set against the evocative melodies of Cayabyab’s compositions, the dancers brought to life stories of holiday joy, emphasizing the core values of Filipino culture, the sense of community, and the Christmas spirit.
Scenes like the jubilant Simbang Gabi (Dawn Mass) and the heartfelt Noche Buena (Christmas Eve feast) vividly portrayed the shared traditions of a Filipino Christmas, highlighting the essence of camaraderie and true friendship.
“This experience is really amazing. I enjoyed it so much because my sister is a dancer too. I truly felt the Christmas spirit through the dance I just watched,” shared Shee Anne, a student from Pasay City North High School, after the performance.
For Alina of San Juan National High School, the performance also captured the genuine spirit of friendship.
“I showed how our country celebrates Christmas. As our culture is shared while experiencing Christmas, the performance also highlighted the celebration of friendship,” she explained in Filipino.
In addition to the main event, food stalls were set up around Kalayaan Grounds, offering complimentary snacks and treats to the attendees.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Marcos are set to lead the traditional lighting of the Malacañang Christmas tree later on Sunday evening.
