Gates Scholarship 2024

The Gates Scholarship was launched in the year 2017, as an expansion of the already ongoing Gates Millennium Scholarship program. The Gates Millennium Scholarship program was established in the year 1999. The goal of Gates Scholarships is to support talented, low-income minority students in their pursuit of pursuing higher education.

This scholarship is awarded every year to exceptional students who demonstrate who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities and the world.

Gates Scholarship Benefits

Scholars who are selected for the Gates Scholarship are entitled to various benefits that support their educational journey as well as personal development.

Gates Scholars will receive funding for the full cost of attendance that other financial aid and the expected family contribution, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or the methodology used by a Scholar’s college or university, do not already cover.

The cost of attendance includes the following:

  • Tuition,
  • Fees,
  • Room expenses,
  • Board expenses,
  • Books, and
  • Transportation expenses

NOTE: Please note that the cost of attendance may include other personal costs as well.

Gates Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the Scholarship, one must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be a high school senior student,
  • Applicant must be from at least one of the following ethnicities:
    • African-American,
    • American Indian/Alaska Native*,
    • Asian & Pacific Islander American,
    • and/or Hispanic American
  • Shall be Pell-eligible
  • Must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • The applicant must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) .

Additionally, a student must plan to enroll full-time, in a four-year degree program, at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.

Note: Proof of tribal enrollment is required for students of American Indian/Alaska Native ethnicities.

How is a Gates Scholar selected

Gates Scholar is selected on the basis of the Ideal Candidate eligibility for the scholarship, which is as follows:

  • The student must have an outstanding academic record in high school (in the top 10% of his/her graduating class)
  • Should demonstrate leadership ability (e.g., as shown through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities)
  • Must have exceptional personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, etc.)

Scholarship Application Timeline

The timeline for the Gates Scholarships is as follows:

  • Opening date of Gates Scholarships application is July 15 every year.
  • Deadline date to apply for Gates Scholarship is on September 15 every year.
  • The reviewers review the scholarship applications and contact semifinalists in the month of December or January.
  • The finalists interviews takes place in March and scholars are selected in the month of April.
  • Scholars will be awarded with Gates Scholarships in July – September in time for the fall semester.

The federal government provides financial aid to college students in the form of grants, work-study jobs, and/or student loans.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Opens on October 1st of every year.

This Student Aid is administered by the Office of Federal Student Aid. So, completing this form is critical!

  • It is the only way to qualify for federal financial assistance of any type,
  • You must submit it, in order to apply for The Gates Scholarship!
